Most changes to a master's programme during candidature require formal approval. Requests can be made in eVision or, for some research-related changes, by submitting a form through the departmental administrator. If you are a research student, you should discuss proposed changes with your supervisor first.

Deferral and permanent withdrawal

Masters' students are required to remain continuously enrolled until thesis submission. In some circumstances, a temporary deferral (suspension of study) may be approved. During deferral, enrolment is paused, thesis deadlines are adjusted, scholarship payments stop, and University services and supervision are unavailable. StudyLink entitlements and student visas may also be affected.

If you are considering permanent withdrawal, discuss your options with appropriate staff, including the head of department. Withdrawal requests can be made in eVision. In some cases, completed papers may be credited towards another postgraduate qualification.

Time limits and extensions

Most masters' degrees have a maximum completion timeframe. In exceptional circumstances, an extension may be approved by the appropriate pro-vice-chancellor (PVC) or nominee, with support from the head of department (HOD) and dean (where applicable).

Upgrading to a PhD

In exceptional circumstances, research masters' students may be allowed to transfer to a PhD. Applications are made through eVision and require supervisor support and approval from the HOD, the PVC (or nominee), and the Graduate Research Committee.

Applications are assessed on factors including academic performance, research capability, subject knowledge, and readiness for doctoral study. Upgrades are not normally considered until at least eight months of thesis work has been completed. If approved, the PhD start date is usually backdated to the start of the master's degree.
