Donor-funded scholarships are special in that the funds provided are from individuals, trusts, or foundations who have offered their own money to provide financial support to University of Otago students. Acknowledging their contribution is an important part of receiving the scholarship.

How do I acknowledge a donor-funded scholarship

Before you commence your studies

To acknowledge your scholarship:

  1. Write a thank you letter to the donor of your scholarship. The letter should be about one A4 page long and be either in Word format, or in the body of an email. Include:

    • A brief introduction about yourself, including where you are from

    • Your study plans, why you chose Otago, and your interest in your chosen field

    • Your future aspirations

    • How the scholarship will assist you

    • A personal message of thanks to the donor for the support you have received

  2. You are welcome to include one or two photos to personalise your letter and help the donor get to know you better

  3. Email your letter to the Stewardship Officer in the Development and Alumni Relations Office at stewardship@otago.ac.nz by the due date advised in your scholarship offer letter.

  4. Note that your scholarship funds may not be released until your thank you letter has been received. Check your offer letter to see if this applies to you.

During your studies

Some donors wish to hear how you are progressing through your studies. You may also be required to provide additional progress reports to the Development and Alumni Relations Office.
