Alternative arrangements in final University of Otago examinations are designed to assist students with impairments who may experience difficulty sitting exams under conventional circumstances. These arrangements aim to provide an equitable opportunity for students to participate and achieve by accommodating disability- or impairment-related needs.

What alternative arrangements are available

Disability Information and Support arrange a number of supports, including:

  • Readers
  • Writers
  • Additional time (standard extra time is 10 minutes per hour of examination)
  • Ergonomic equipment
  • Alternative formatting of examination papers
  • Use of a computer
  • Separate examination rooms
  • Other arrangements that best meet your documented needs

Supporting documentation

If Disability Information and Support does not already hold current and relevant documentation, you will need to provide supporting documentation from an appropriate health professional or specialist.

The documentation will clearly explain the nature of the impairment, the functional impact on examinations, and why the requested arrangements are necessary.

Before you apply

Before submitting an application, check with your course co-ordinators or lecturers whether your papers include final examinations and what format those examinations will take.

This helps ensure you apply for the most appropriate arrangements.

Once you can view the examination timetable in your eVision timetable, you can submit an application for alternative examination arrangements through the Examinations and Results section of your eVision portal. Ensure you submit your application by the deadline for the relevant examination period.

The deadlines to apply are:

  • Summer School – 5pm, 1 February
  • Semester 1 – 5pm, 7 May
  • Semester 2 – 5pm, 7 September

If you apply after the deadline, you will need to clearly explain the exceptional circumstances that prevented you from applying on time.

Exceptional circumstances may include the worsening of an existing condition or the onset of a new condition or injury and should be supported by verifying documentation.

Late applications that do not meet the criteria for exceptional circumstances may be declined.

Communication and notifications

Most communication about your application will be sent through your eVision portal.

If further information is required, Disability Information and Support or the Examinations Team may contact you by email.

Changes to exam date, time, or venue

Requests to change the date, time, or venue of a final examination are considered separately and are only approved in exceptional circumstances.
