The University of Otago is bound by New Zealand Privacy Act (2020) restrictions on the disclosure of personal student information. Staff are unable to confirm if a person is a student at the University and no personal information can be shared. A student's details cannot be released without the permission of that student, except in very exceptional circumstances (usually in cases of emergency or law enforcement).
Your examination results and enrolment details are covered by privacy legislation which means they cannot be released to other people without your permission. Parents or other family members have no automatic right of access to information (even if they are paying your tuition fees).
If a family member needs to find a student in an emergency, or is concerned about their welfare, the Proctor's Office may be able to assist on a case-by-case basis, but is also bound by privacy rules and regulations.
