The University of Otago runs four examination periods each year: Summer School, Semester 1, Semester 2, and Pre-Christmas Summer School.

The examination periods for 2026 are:

  • Summer School: 14 February 2026 to 19 February 2026 (inclusive)
  • Semester 1: 3 June to 17 June 2026 (inclusive)
  • Semester 2: 19 October to 7 November 2026 (inclusive)
  • Pre-Christmas Summer School: 12 December 2026

Timetables for each period are released:

  • Summer School: late January
  • Semester 1: mid to late April
  • Semester 2: mid to late August

Examination timetabling cannot begin until after the final date to delete papers for that teaching period.

Once the examination timetable has been finalised, your personal timetable will be displayed in the Timetable section of your eVision portal.

You are expected to sit final examinations as scheduled, in accordance with the Examination and Assessment Regulations

The main examination centre is Dunedin. For extramural or distance learning students, examinations are held at a University-nominated venue near your normal study location.

Special examinations

Some examinations are run centrally, while others are organised by academic departments. Departmentally run special examinations may not appear in the central timetable and may be held at different times. If you cannot see your special examination listed, contact the relevant department directly.

Centrally run special examinations are held after the main examination periods. Dates vary by teaching period and paper.

Semester 1 2026 centrally run special examinations will be held from Monday 13 to Wednesday 22 July 2026 (the first two weeks of semester 2).
