If you have Fail listed as a result for a particular paper without an associated grade (for example, Fail D or Fail E is not shown), it could be for a number of reasons.
An ungraded Fail result may be given if you have accumulated a high enough mark in your internal assessment to have passed overall, but you have failed a compulsory component of the paper (such as a test, lab, or final exam). Some departments record this as a Fail (or Fail Compulsory) rather than a graded fail.
Some papers are assessed on a Pass/Fail basis only. For these papers, no letter grade is assigned, and results will show simply as Pass or Fail.
Final results are released through the Examinations and Results section of your eVision portal. When results first appear, they may be marked Unconfirmed. Once the Unconfirmed label is removed, the result is official.
For graded papers, the University of Otago converts final numerical marks into grades using the standard grading scale. Grades below 50 result in a fail (Fail D or Fail E), while results between 40 and 49 are recorded as Fail D and results below 40 as Fail E.
If you are unsure why a Fail result has been recorded for your paper, contact the teaching department for clarification, as they can explain how assessment rules were applied in your case.
