When you select your papers in eVision, the system will automatically enforce paper selection rules, such as checking that you have completed any prerequisite papers.

If you want to select a paper that is not allowed by the paper selection rules in eVision, you will need to request Special Permission to do so. You can request Special Permission at the end of the paper selection process.

Special Permission is not guaranteed. Because of this, it is recommended that you also select an alternative paper when submitting your request. You can ask for the alternative paper to be removed if Special Permission is approved.

Reasons for requesting Special Permission

You will need to choose one of the following reasons for your request:

  • I do not meet the prerequisite or corequisite for this paper
You tried to pick this paper but a rule blocked you and you have a background or experience that you believe is equivalent to the prerequisite or corequisite. Example: you lived in France for a year as a child and want to skip FREN 131 and do the more advanced FREN 132

  • I completed relevant study elsewhere
You tried to pick this paper but a rule blocked you and you have completed study elsewhere that you believe is equivalent to the prerequisite or corequisite. Example: you have NCEA 3 French and want to skip FREN 131 and do the more advanced FREN 132

  • The paper is not available within my programme
The paper is not included in the regulations of your programme. Example: you are a BA student who wants to apply to take a 400-level Bioethics paper

  • I wish to repeat a paper to get a better grade
You want to repeat a paper you already passed. Example: LAWS 101. To repeat a paper, you will also need to apply for a Certificate of Proficiency

  • I wish to repeat a Special Topic
You passed a Special Topic paper in a previous year with different content to the current offering

  • Other
Use this where none of the other options fits your situation. You will be required to provide an explanation to support your request

Special Permission papers will not appear in your timetable or fees invoice until permission has been granted.

Departmental Permission

Some papers require Departmental Permission. This will be indicated in the eligibility section on the individual paper pages and during the paper selection process in eVision.

You can still select these papers, but a place is not immediately guaranteed. University staff will review and approve or decline these papers in eVision when assessing your enrolment.

Departmental Permission papers will not appear in your timetable or fees invoice until permission is granted.

Departmental Permission is commonly used where enrolments are limited due to resource constraints.
