Citrix Workspace (also known as Citrix Receiver) provides secure access to your Student Desktop or Staff Desktop. It can be downloaded free on any device.

This step-by-step guide shows you how to install the Citrix Receiver/Workspace so you can use the fully-featured version of the Student Desktop on your own computer. If you are not able to install Citrix Receiver/Workspace, you can also access the "light" version of the Student Desktop through your web browser.

Accessing the "light" version of Student Desktop or Staff Desktop

  1. Go to https://student.desktop.otago.ac.nz/ (or https://staff.desktop.otago.ac.nz/ if appropriate) and sign in with your University email and password.
  2. Click on the Use light version link as shown in the image below:

  3. Navigate to the Desktops tab at the top of the page and select the desired desktop from this page.

  4. Once you click on the icon, it should open a new tab and take you to the light version of the Staff or Student Desktop.

Installing the Citrix Receiver/Workspace application

  1. Go to https://student.desktop.otago.ac.nz/ (or https://staff.desktop.otago.ac.nz/ if appropriate) and sign in with your University email and password.
  2. Click on the Detect Citrix Workspace App button.

  3. Tick the "I agree..." option in the following page, then click Download to download the installer.

  4. Once the installer is downloaded, complete the installation process and restart your device.

Using Citrix Receiver/Workspace to access Student Desktop or Staff Desktop

  1. After restarting, open a browser window, go to https://student.desktop.otago.ac.nz/ (or https://staff.desktop.otago.ac.nz/ if appropriate) and sign in with your University email and password.
  2. Click the Detect Citrix Receiver option, and you will see a pop-up Open Citrix Workspace Launcher. Click Cancel on this pop-up window, then click on the Already installed link under the Download button:

  3. Click on the Desktops tab at the top, and then click on the Student Shared Desktop (or Staff Shared Desktop) icon and it will download a session file. Once downloaded, run this file which should default to open the Citrix Receiver/Workspace app.

You should then be automatically signed in to Student Desktop or Staff Desktop.

Switching between the Citrix Receiver/Workspace version and the light version of Student Desktop or Staff Desktop

  1. Go to https://student.desktop.otago.ac.nz/ or https://staff.desktop.otago.ac.nz/and sign in with your University email and password.
  2. On the top right corner of the page you will see the Settings cog and next to it a small drop-down arrow. Click on the arrow and from the menu, select Account Settings. You will see an option for Change Citrix Receiver....

  3. You can then choose between using the Light version or full version.

If you run into any issues, first try clearing the cookies and cache of your browser or use a private/incognito window to access the Student Desktop.

Mouse moving/mis-clicking when using Citrix applications

Occasionally scaling issues may cause your mouse to move in ways you don't expect, resulting in mis-clicking or other issues. This can be resolved by the following solution:

  1. In the bottom right of Windows, right-click the tray icon for Citrix (the little blue/white circle icon), then select Advanced Preferences from the displayed menu.
  2. When a pop-up window appears, click on the link for High DPI.
  3. In the next window, select the No, use the native resolution radio button, then click Save.
