If you are a student who has not yet completed course declaration, you can use the UO_GUEST Wi-Fi until you have a University username. Refer to the related article: UO_GUEST – Visitor network access

The University of Otago's Wi-Fi network, eduroam, also provides free and secure Wi-Fi in many places both nationally and internationally, if you connect using the geteduroam app.

Once connected, you automatically access any institution's eduroam Wi-Fi by connecting with your University of Otago credentials.

Who is this available to

University of Otago students, staff, people with an "external" username, and visitors with eduroam access.

How do I connect to eduroam

If you are using a University of Otago Digital Workstation (OUDW), this will be set up by IT Services to connect to eduroam – you don't need to do anything.

Otherwise, to connect to eduroam, you must be on a University of Otago campus.

Then you can either:

  1. Use the app, which is recommended:
    • On an Android device, open the Google Play store and install the geteduroam app
    • On an Apple device, open the App store and install the geteduroam app
    • On a Windows or Mac device, visit the eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool
  2. Log in using this format:
    • Staff: username@registry.otago.ac.nz – username format is e.g. doejo91p, not your first and last name – and your University password
    • Student: username@student.otago.ac.nz – username format is e.g. doejo987, not your first and last name – and your University password
    • Other/External:
      • "student-like" (i.e. Non-OU Student): username@student.otago.ac.nz – username format is e.g. doejo123, not your first and last name – and your University password
      • "staff-like" (i.e. Non-OU Staff, Contractor, CFI, Clinical Lecturer): username@registry.otago.ac.nz – username format is e.g. doejo234, not your first and last name – and your University password
  3. Manually:
    • On your device, select Settings
    • Select Connections/Wi-Fi/Network, whichever is appropriate to your device
    • All available networks should now be listed, including eduroam
    • Log in using the username format shown for staff, student and other/external above (step 2), or you will only be able to connect to eduroam on University of Otago campuses.
    • If you are redirected to the UO_GUEST login portal after trying to connect to eduroam, make sure that you are using the correct email address and password to connect. If these details are correct and you are still being redirected to the UO_GUEST login portal, contact AskOtago
  4. Once you are logged in, you may need to use one of the instruction tip sheets below for your phone, laptop, or tablet.

Visitors: your home institution can control which websites you can visit when using eduroam at the University of Otago. Contact the IT services at your home institution for details.
