A phishing email is one that tries to trick you into revealing sensitive information. You may be asked to forward suspicious emails when reporting them.

How do I forward a suspicious email

If you are requested to forward a suspicious email to AskOtago IT:

Outlook (on the web/online)

  1. Log in to your University email using Outlook online.
  2. Click the ellipsis (three dots) link at the top of the message (near the Forward link)
  3. Select View > Message Details from the drop-down menu. This will bring up a window containing the full header information
  4. Click in the window and select all the text, then copy it to your clipboard (Ctrl-C in Windows or Cmd-C in MacOS). 
  5. Create a new message to: askotago.it@otago.ac.nz
  6. Paste (Ctrl-V in Windows or Cmd-V in MacOS) the header information at the top of the new email.
  7. Send the new message.

Outlook online

Outlook (desktop version)

  1. Create a new message to: askotago.it@otago.ac.nz
  2. Drag and drop the email you want to report from your Inbox into the new message window. It will appear as an attachment to the email message.
  3. Send the new message.

MacOS Mail

  1. Click on the message to select it.
  2. Click on Message in the menu bar and select Forward as Attachment from the drop-down menu.
  3. Send the new message to: askotago.it@otago.ac.nz

Additionally, if you have clicked any links provided in the email, or provided any account details, payment details etc. advise AskOtago immediately.
