A phishing email is one that tries to trick you into revealing sensitive information. You may be asked to forward suspicious emails when reporting them.
How do I forward a suspicious email
If you are requested to forward a suspicious email to AskOtago IT:
Outlook (on the web/online)
- Log in to your University email using Outlook online.
- Click the ellipsis (three dots) link at the top of the message (near the Forward link)
- Select View > Message Details from the drop-down menu. This will bring up a window containing the full header information
- Click in the window and select all the text, then copy it to your clipboard (Ctrl-C in Windows or Cmd-C in MacOS).
- Create a new message to: askotago.it@otago.ac.nz
- Paste (Ctrl-V in Windows or Cmd-V in MacOS) the header information at the top of the new email.
- Send the new message.
Outlook (desktop version)
- Create a new message to: askotago.it@otago.ac.nz
- Drag and drop the email you want to report from your Inbox into the new message window. It will appear as an attachment to the email message.
- Send the new message.
MacOS Mail
- Click on the message to select it.
- Click on Message in the menu bar and select Forward as Attachment from the drop-down menu.
- Send the new message to: askotago.it@otago.ac.nz
Additionally, if you have clicked any links provided in the email, or provided any account details, payment details etc. advise AskOtago immediately.
