Everyone studies differently. There is a range of services and support available to help you.

To start exploring different strategies to learn, work through the UNIO 101: Getting started at Otago modules on Blackboard. These introduce core study strategies, university expectations, and ways to build effective learning habits early in your studies.

Student Academic Skills (SAS) offers a range of services and advice relating to learning support and academic skill development. SAS can support you with developing positive study habits, improving time management, preparing for exams, and strengthening skills such as essay writing, research, and thesis planning.

You can access SAS support in several ways:

  • Book an individual consultation with a learning adviser for personalised, practical guidance (available by appointment across Dunedin, Wellington, Christchurch, and Southland campuses, including support for distance students)
  • Register for workshops that run regularly throughout the year (registration is required as spaces are limited)
  • Use a wide range of online resources, including downloadable study guides, tip sheets, and links to other helpful learning tools
  • If you enjoy learning with others and are a first-year student, consider Peer-Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) or drop in to see a peer writer
  • If your results are not meeting your expectations, the academic recovery plan worksheet can help you create a practical plan to get back on track

SAS also offers accountability hours, providing a quiet space to work, support to stay on task, goal-setting templates, and information on different study methods.
