The University of Otago operates non-audio closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras on and around campus to help take care of both people and property. Because of its unique residential nature, the University has a responsibility to make sure students are well cared for.

The cameras are overseen by the Proctor's Office. Camera feeds are sent from the cameras to the Campus Watch Control Room and the footage is held securely in the Proctor's Office for 30 days before being overwritten.

The University of Otago has a CCTV policy and procedures in place to make sure that the cameras are being operated in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020.

Only approved staff can view CCTV footage in line with the University's CCTV policy. The University's Privacy Officer ensures that the privacy of individuals is protected and will investigate any complaints of Privacy Act breaches.
