A network outlet (port):

  1. Is required for a wired network connection
  2. Has a white faceplate with identifying letters and numbers on it for each outlet
  3. Needs to be activated to provide access to the network
  4. Can be activated for access to different network services

You can find out if an existing network outlet is active by plugging your computer into it and confirming you have network connectivity. Alternatively, contact AskOtago as they can also check this for you.

If you need a new network outlet installed, and this is not part an office refurbishment activity being managed by Property Services, use the Network Outlet form—select New installation as the Change Type under Outlet Details.

You can also use this form if you wish to activate or deactivate an existing network outlet.

You can request the activation of a network port to use with a phone by logging in to the AskOtago Customer Portal using your University username and password.

All changes, requests for information, faults (including repair of physical damage to network outlet) or new outlet requests are logged to ITS Infrastructure.

Hospital outlets

New outlet installations in Dunedin Hospital should go to the Hospital/DHB IT Help Desk. Once the installation of hospital ports has been completed, an activation request can be logged to ITS Infrastructure for use on UO networks.

Hospital outlets are denoted by a ">" prefix before the outlet number in the Network Database (e.g. ">AC18"). The ">" symbol is not listed on the label that will be on the outlet, so ask the user where they are if there is any uncertainty (verify with Ops whether hospital ports show in imVision).
