The Division of Sciences runs a number of Science Outreach programmes to support both school students and teachers in reaching their potential in science.

The Outreach Certificate is a formal acknowledgement by the University of Otago of students' contribution to science community engagement and learning activities, recognising the time, knowledge, communication skills, and creativity they contribute.

The Science Outreach Certificate is also a recognised category within the Unicrew Otago Emerging Leaders Programme, allowing eligible outreach activities to contribute toward that programme.

Normally students need to apply for a certificate before graduating and only work carried out prior to graduation will be acceptable. Individual or exceptional applications may be raised at monthly committee meetings.

To be eligible, students complete a minimum of 30 hours of approved Science Outreach or Community Engagement activities. These activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Presenting science talks or demonstrations to community groups
  • Supporting or helping teach school-based science outreach programmes (such as those run by the NZ Marine Studies Centre, Orokonui Ecosanctuary, the New Zealand International Science Festival, or academic departments)
  • Creating science communication content, including blogs, podcasts, exhibitions, artwork, or films
  • Preparing interpretation or information boards for community organisations
  • Mentoring high school students (or younger) through University science outreach initiatives
