If you did not achieve the required number of credits to meet University Entrance (UE) requirements, you may consider taking NCEA catch-up credits.

This involves undertaking additional assessments or coursework to earn the necessary credits after the official NCEA results are released by NZQA in January.

The University of Otago requires confirmation from NZQA that you have achieved UE by Friday 14 February 2025. If you need to complete extra catch-up credits, make sure you speak to your school's NZQA liaison person to have your results recorded on the NZQA website before that date.

Where can I complete catch-up credits?

You can approach your school to see to see if they may allow you to complete the necessary credits with them. Alternatively, the following may assist you in gaining the credits you need:

When I complete my catch-up credits, how do I update my results?

No matter which institution you attend, the University must have official confirmation that you have achieved your credits and University Entrance by Friday 14 February 2025.

It is important you contact AskOtago once these have been reported to NZQA.

How would catch-up credits affect my scholarship/residential college place?

Any University of Otago scholarships you have applied for or accepted will not be affected as long as you gain UE before 14 February or enrol in a Diploma programme.

Places in residential colleges are reliant upon achieving UE or studying in one of the programmes offered by Pathway. If you have an offer from a college, contact the Accommodation Office as soon as possible about your intention to undertake catch-up credits:

If I’m unable to do catch-up credits, what other options are available?

Pathway Level 5 Diploma

If you are interested in studying subjects from Arts, Business, or Sciences, contact the Pathway team to discuss the Level 5 Diploma course that provides a degree pathway in these areas:

Tel +64 3 479 5250
Email pathways.admissions@otago.ac.nz
Web Pathway and English Language Centre

The Diploma is not available for students interested in Health Sciences First Year.

The requirements for admission into the Diplomas are:

  • At least 16 credits in each of your top 4 subjects at Level 2 or above (some of these credits must be at Level 3). Three of these subjects must be from the approved list
  • Literacy and numeracy requirements for University Entrance
  • Credits in Level 3:
    • 50 credits or more will automatically gain entry to the Diploma upon enrolment
    • 45-49 credits will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by the Pathway team

Students must normally complete Year 13. Students who have not completed Year 13 due to extenuating circumstances may be considered.

If you are ineligible for the Diploma, Pathway also offer the Foundation Studies Certificate which will grant you University Entrance.

Certificate in University Preparation (CUP)

You could consider completing an accepted Certificate in University Preparation (CUP) course, which usually takes one semester of study. This is offered at some universities but is not currently offered through the University of Otago.

Polytechnic

Studying at a polytechnic could also be considered, normally one semester of successful full-time academic study at NQF Level 5 or above meets University entry requirements.

Reconsideration of NCEA results

If you believe that any of your Level 3 grades are incorrect, you need to apply for reconsideration as soon as possible. NZQA will prioritise reconsideration of Level 3 assessments.

If you wish to discuss your situation, contact your Schools’ Liaison Officer
