NCEA results are provided automatically to the University in mid-January each year by NZQA. Your results will be matched to your application and your eligibility for entrance will be checked. It is important to ensure that your NCEA results are not withheld from tertiary institutions through NZQA, otherwise the University will not receive them.

Your admission status will be updated once you have obtained University Entrance (UE). This is a manual process and is separate from programme admission. University Entrance is awarded through NCEA Level 3 by achieving:

  • NCEA Level 3, and
  • 14 credits at Level 3 in each of three subjects from the approved list

You must also meet literacy and numeracy requirements:

  • Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above from specified standards, with at least 5 credits in Reading and 5 credits in Writing
  • Numeracy: 10 credits at Level 1 or above (can be achieved through a range of standards)

Once you meet the requirements, UE will appear on your NZQA Record of Achievement.

If you have achieved UE but have not heard from the University of Otago within 24 hours, there may be some parts of your application that you need to complete. Log in to your eVision portal and check if you have any outstanding Admission Tasks, such as a request to provide identity documentation.

You may be considered for Discretionary entrance to take Summer School papers before your NCEA Level 3 results are released. If you do not gain UE in January following a successful application, you will be required to withdraw from Summer School and apply for readmission in a later semester.
