You can request an extension to your master’s research programme if you need more time to complete your thesis due to exceptional circumstances. Your supervisor will be able to discuss your options with you

For masters' programmes where the regulations stipulate that the programme must be completed within a specified timeframe, extensions must be academically approved by way of a PVC variation.

If an extension is agreed in programmes with no specified timeframe for completion, the department will be able to enter the new submission date in the system.

How do I extend a research programme

If you need more time to submit your master's thesis:

  1. Discuss the situation with your supervisor and head of department to obtain support.
  2. Make an application in writing to the appropriate divisional pro-vice-chancellor to request an extension to the time limit. Applications should be supported by the head of department and dean (where applicable).
  3. Email: masters@otago.ac.nz with your new submission date.
