Understanding how your workload is structured helps you plan your study effectively.
Full-time and part-time study
- A full-time course is usually 54 to 72 points per semester, or 108 to 144 points per year
- A part-time course is generally anything below 54 points in a semester, or below 108 points across the full year
Most papers at Otago are 18 points.
An 18‑point paper typically requires at least 14 hours of study per week. This includes:
- Formal learning time such as lectures, tutorials, and labs
- Independent study such as reading, revision, assignments, and exam preparation
Most students enrol in 108 to 126 points per year.
If you are considering taking more than this, it is a good idea to seek course advice before finalising your enrolment.
At Summer School, one 18‑point paper is considered a full-time workload. Taking more than 18 points is considered a heavy load and requires additional approval.
In your first year
Getting your workload right in your first semester is especially important while you adjust to University study. Starting with a manageable number of papers helps you build confidence and good study habits.
