The OUSA-managed Women's Room opened in 1983 and is a place where all those who identify as women can feel safe, welcome, and free from harassment of any kind. It has kitchen facilities with a fridge, microwave, hot water, and a sink.

Access to the Women's Room is limited to:

  • All students and staff on campus who identify as women — there are no requirements or criteria defining womanhood to access the room
  • Their children, excluding males of five years of age or older
  • Any other persons deemed necessary for the maintenance and upkeep of the Women's Room by the Student Support Manager

General members of the public or individuals not otherwise associated with the University of Otago may not be granted access.

Access to the Women's Room is restricted during private or public events being held in the University Union building that require those attending to be over 18 years of age.

The Women's Room is located on the first floor of the University Union Building and is open at these times:

  • During semester time: 7:30am to 10:00pm weekdays; 10:00am to 10:00pm weekends
  • Outside of semester time: 7:30am to 7:00pm weekdays; closed weekends
