A University prize can be awarded to a current student at the University of Otago in recognition of previous performance and is not usually based on future conditions such as enrolment in a particular qualification or paper.

Prize winners are decided by the area that initiated the establishment of the prize based on criteria set when the prize was established.

Students are nominated for the prize and the administration is managed by Student Experience. Official University prizes are listed on a student's academic record.

Nominating a student for a University prize is done via the eVision Scholarships and Awards module and the student will be notified in eVision, however a process for notifying prize recipients is recommended, either by email or letter, to acknowledge their achievement alongside the eVision notification.
