Lectures give you the core information for each paper and are one of the main methods of instruction at the University of Otago. They are scheduled for 50 minutes and are normally an oral presentation by teaching staff.
Attending and being on time for your lectures supports your success as a student. It is important to attend your lectures, as recordings or notes are not a full substitute for engaging with the material first-hand.
You are welcome to prepare for your lectures by accessing lecture resources in Brightspace, Blackboard, or Moodle. Some papers may also expect you to complete preset tasks or readings before attending lectures. It is recommended that you take notes during your lectures and review these afterwards.
Most lectures are recorded and made available to students; check with your paper for the details.
Your timetable in eVision gives you the times and locations of lectures.
Lectures work in conjunction with tutorials and laboratory sessions to provide a comprehensive teaching and learning experience.
You should:
- Attend preliminary lectures which outline what the paper will cover, required assignments, and recommended textbooks
- Arrive on time to all classes
- Complete any required preparation before class
- Pay attention, ask questions, and join in discussions to reinforce your learning
