If you are unable to attend your graduation ceremony, you can withdraw from it. This needs to be done at least five weeks prior to the date of the ceremony.

This removes you from the ceremony entirely but does not automatically change your application status to in absentia. If you wish to change your application status from in person to in absentia, you can do this via your eVision portal.

Graduating in absentia means that you will still graduate in a ceremony but you do not attend the ceremony.

Who is this available to

Students who have applied for a graduation ceremony but are no longer able to attend.

How do I withdraw

To withdraw your application to graduate (either in person or in absentia):

  1. Log in to eVision.
  2. Click the See more link under My graduation.
  3. Click on the Withdraw from ceremony link.
  4. To graduate in absentia, then select Graduate in absentia.

Log in to eVision

If you have any problems withdrawing yourself from the ceremony or changing your status to in absentia, email the Graduation Office immediately at  graduation@otago.ac.nz

If you are still within twelve months of completing your qualification, you can reapply for a place in a ceremony to be held later.

If you have applied to graduate in person and need to give less than five weeks' notice, contact AskOtago.

As your name is unable to be removed from the graduation programme within five weeks, your qualification will be awarded in absentia. If this happens, you will not be able to attend another ceremony as you can graduate only once with each qualification.
