The University of Otago uses method bins, which are full sets of clearly labelled bins placed in common areas around campus around campus to encourage the diversion of waste from landfill. They should not be moved or removed.
Method bin rules:
- Recycling bins: clean rigid plastics numbered 1, 2, and 5 (no smaller than a yoghurt container) and all clean cans
- Paper bins: printed paper, newspapers, and small flattened cardboard boxes
- Glass bins: clean glass bottles and jars only (no lids, broken glass, mirrors, or kitchen glassware)
- Landfill bins: general waste, soft plastics, plastics 3, 4, 6, and 7, coffee cups and lids, and tissues/paper towels
Waste can be placed in the appropriate bin around campus and within departments. Desk pods are small bins used at workstations that are designed to pre-sort waste before being emptied into method bins.
Method bins are emptied by cleaning contractors on a regular basis. Staff members are encouraged to empty their own desk pods. Landfill bins are emptied daily. Recycling, paper, and glass bins are emptied when they are half or three-quarters full.
All front load bins and wheelie bins are collected on a predetermined schedule.
