The University of Otago maintains a collection of artworks, displayed throughout the buildings and across campus.
The collection enhances and reflects the culture and character of the University, embellishing or enhancing buildings and the campus for the benefit of staff, students and visitors. The collections recognise the links to the wider community, individuals and events connected to the University and the longstanding place and presence of mana whenua.
There are three collections maintained:
- The Embellishment Collection
- The Staff Club Collection
- The Frances Hodgkins Fellowship Trust Collection

Artwork Collections Committee

Departments may acquire artwork for their spaces as part of approved building or refurbishment projects, using departmental funds, or through donations or bequests made specifically to the department. Some artworks are also acquired centrally through the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and the Art Collections Committee.
Before purchasing artwork, departments must consult with the Artworks Collections Committee to ensure the proposed work meets collection criteria and is appropriate for inclusion. Departments are also responsible for any ongoing care and maintenance costs.
Once artwork is acquired, departments must notify the Collections Administrator so it can be recorded in the Collections Catalogue. The department's Asset Register should also be updated where required.
