Certain specialised programmes and papers require students to complete a student safety check for working with children and young people. This process includes an identity verification check, which may be completed by bringing the appropriate identification documents to an AskOtago hub or having these certified by an appropriate identity referee.

Who does this apply to

Students whose programmes or papers require involvement in regular or overnight contact with children and young people in the context of particular regulated services. If you are required to complete a safety check, you will be advised of this during the application process or by your department directly.

How do I complete my identity verification for the student safety check

To complete your identity verification:

  1. Review the Identification Requirements for Children’s Act and Police Vetting
  2. Bring your documents to the AskOtago Central Hub, Christchurch Hub, or Wellington Hub for verification. AskOtago staff will enter the required information into eVision.
    OR
  3. Have your documents certified by an appropriate identity referee (PDF 293KB) and upload these to eVision.

Staff at one of the AskOtago hubs OR an identity referee can verify your original documents. If you have an identity referee verify your documents, you may also need to bring your original documents into the University of Otago at a later date to complete identity verification for a Working with Children check.

Documents may also be brought to the Auckland Centre by appointment, or to the Invercargill campus for students in teaching programmes.

Further information

The timeframe for completing your student safety check depends on a number of variables, including your programme of study, the time of year, and police vetting processing times. It is a good idea to arrange to complete your identity check as soon as possible to account for potential delays.

Enquiries about this service or issues with any aspects of this process should be directed to AskOtago.
