Who is this available to

Students whose programmes require involvement in regular or overnight contact with children and young people in the context of particular regulated services.

How do I complete a student safety check

To complete a student safety check:

  1. Review the Identification Requirements for Children’s Act and Police Vetting
  2. Bring your documents to the AskOtago Central Hub, Christchurch Hub, or Wellington Hub for verification, OR
  3. Have your documents certified by an appropriate identity referee (PDF 293KB) and upload these to eVision.

Staff at one of the AskOtago hubs OR an identity referee can verify your original documents. If you have an identity referee verify your documents, you will also need to bring your original documents in to the University of Otago at a later date to complete identity verification for a Working with Children check.

Documents may also be brought to the Auckland Centre by appointment, or to the Invercargill campus for students in teaching programmes.

How much does it cost

This service is free of charge.

When can I expect delivery

Timeframes for receiving your verified safety check results are subject to a number of variables, based on the programme you are studying, time of the academic year, whether an external organisation (such as the New Zealand Police) also need to verify your information, and several other factors. It is a good idea to arrange to complete your safety check as soon as possible to account for potential delays.
