Examination is the process by which a thesis is marked and graded. PhDs and research master's programmes require examination. There are some differences between the two examination types. For master's programmes, details of the examination process for specific degrees are set out in the relevant degree regulations and divisionally approved policies.

Following the submission of your thesis, examiners review and then provide reports and recommendations. These reports are considered by the convener and an initial result is provided. In the case of a PhD thesis examination, an oral exam is arranged prior to the delivery of an initial result.

Following the initial result, it may be necessary to complete amendments or revisions to the thesis. In this case, the examination process may be repeated, with examiners providing their new reports to the convener.

If there is consensus among the examiners, the final result will then be delivered.

A revised and resubmitted master's thesis will be given a pass or fail grade, without eligibility for the award of the degree with credit or distinction.
