Oral examinations are a compulsory part of the thesis examination process for PhD students.

For the candidate, an oral examination provides the opportunity to meet the examiners and assist in understanding their comments, defend the thesis, respond to criticism, and clarify any required amendments.

For the examiners, an oral examination provides the opportunity to establish that the candidate fully understands the work and its wider implications, clarify any issues in the thesis, decide on the nature and extent of any corrections or revisions that may be required, assist in reaching a consensus, and to confirm whether the thesis should be recommended as "exceptional".
