The University of Otago has a wide range of appliances available for staff and students. All appliances must be checked and tested in accordance with Government standards and the University Electrical Testing of Portable Equipment Guidelines.
Appliances are regularly checked, serviced, and certified for safe and appropriate use as per the University's Testing of Electrical Equipment Policy. Departments are responsible for identifying specialist electrical items – such as medical or laboratory equipment – that require testing by registered electricians or specialist services.
Before installing any new appliance on campus, it is required to be tested against relevant safety compliance standards through Property Services and certified for use once approved. Once tested, equipment is clearly tagged indicating the name of the tester, the test and re-test date.
Electrical appliances in residential colleges must also be tested and certified prior to use.
If appliances on campus are found to be faulty, repairs and inspections can be arranged by registered electricians.
