An aegrotat pass is a pass result with no mark or grade rewarded. If you are granted an aegrotat pass, it will not be included on your official University of Otago GPA. Because no grade is awarded, this may have implications for scholarships, entry into restricted programmes, or study at other institutions.

If you apply for special consideration because your performance has been significantly impaired by illness or other exceptional circumstances, you may be granted an aegrotat pass.

For an aegrotat pass to be granted, your internal marks must be well above the minimum standard (usually a C+) to pass the paper. Examiners must certify that you have demonstrated sufficient competence in the paper, typically through strong performance in significant internal assessment.

An aegrotat pass may be considered where:

  • You are close to, but not entitled to, a passing mark through a mark adjustment; and/or
  • You are entitled to, but are unlikely to be able to sit, a Special Examination due to ongoing impairment or timing factors (for example, to allow timely graduation)

In some cases, departments may offer you a choice between outcomes, such as:

  • An adjusted examination mark or a Special Examination; or
  • An aegrotat pass or a Special Examination

If you are given a choice, you must respond within eight calendar days. If no choice is made, the outcome will default to the option that is not the Special Examination.

If you are absent from both your final examination and any Special Examination, the possible outcomes are normally an aegrotat pass or your original mark. An aegrotat pass will only be awarded if you meet the eligibility criteria based on your internal marks.

Aegrotat passes are not available as special consideration outcomes for students enrolled in specified Health Sciences programmes. In addition, honours, distinction, or credit may not be awarded if aegrotat passes are granted for more than 30% of a programme (or more than 30% of the final year in a four-year degree).

If you have questions about whether an aegrotat pass is appropriate for your situation, contact the department teaching the paper.
