To help you keep full control of your Apple services, Apple accounts cannot be created using a University of Otago staff or student email address.
If you try to sign up with your University email address, Apple will let you know that accounts cannot end in @otago.ac.nz
or @student.otago.ac.nz
This approach is designed to protect your access. If you leave the University, your @otago mailbox will be closed, which means you would no longer be able to reset an Apple password linked to that email address. Using a personal email address ensures you can retain access to manage your account securely.
If you already have an Apple account linked to a University of Otago email address, you will receive a notification to migrate. You will be offered the choice to transfer it to a work account, or keep it as a personal account. Depending on the services you use (for example, iCloud+), the work account option may not appear.
In most cases, keeping your account as a personal one is the best option. Apple will prompt you to update the associated email address to a personal, ongoing account – such as Gmail or Hotmail – so you can continue to access and manage your Apple services.
