The University of Otago is committed to providing a safe and fair study environment. If you have a concern about how you are being treated by the University, a staff member, another student, or within a group (such as a research group or postgraduate supervision), it is recommended that you first try to resolve the issue directly where appropriate.

If this is not possible, you can seek help from the University's Mediator. The Mediator offers confidential advice and mediation to help you resolve interpersonal issues and find a constructive way forward.

Mediation focuses on helping everyone involved communicate openly, understand different perspectives, and agree on how to work, study, or live together in the future. The Mediator is impartial and does not take sides, make decisions, or judge what has happened.

Mediation is voluntary and confidential. Talking with the Mediator does not commit you to taking further action, and you remain in control of any decisions or outcomes. Any agreements reached are only shared if everyone agrees, and no notes or records are added to your student file without your consent.

Mediation is an informal option and can often help prevent issues from escalating. If a concern is serious or cannot be resolved this way, formal complaints and other University support services are also available, and the Mediator can help you understand your options.
