In some circumstances, your proposed department may support a request to waive the standard English language requirements for University admission.
The Graduate Research Committee considers waiver requests based on several factors related to your English language capability, including:
- An English language test attempted in recent years, with a mark close to the requirement
- Candidate experience living and working in an English-speaking country
- Publications in English
- A thesis written in English and reviewed by the supervisor
- A degree taught in English
- Previous collaboration on research projects with the proposed supervisor
- English language training provided to candidates in the past or will be provided by the department
- The results of a specific task set by the proposed supervisor to assess English language capability

Prospective PhD candidates who do not have evidence that they meet the minimum English language requirements.
How do I apply for an English language waiver
To apply for an English language waiver:
- Review the factors considered by the Graduate Research Committee on the Graduate Research School website
- Discuss your request with your proposed supervisor.
- If your proposed supervisor supports the request, they will:
- Advise the Graduate Research School that a waiver is requested when your PhD application is formally assessed by the department
- Provide a supporting letter on your behalf
