Discretionary entrance is a pathway for domestic students under the age of 20 who do not meet University Entrance (UE) but may still be capable of university study.
To be eligible, you must be a New Zealand citizen or resident (or an eligible Australian student), be under the age of 20 at the start of study and not already qualify for admission.
It is not automatically granted. Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis to ensure you can succeed at university.
How do I apply for discretionary entrance
If you do not qualify for general admission to the University, apply for discretionary entrance:
- Log in to eVision or create an eVision account if you have not already done so.
- Begin your application for discretionary entrance by selecting this as an option.
- Provide a personal statement outlining your academic background, motivation for study, and readiness for university.
- If you are applying directly from secondary school, arrange a school recommendation confirming you were not enrolled in Year 13 beyond 1 June in the year prior to admission.
- Ensure your NCEA results are available to the University through NZQA (i.e., not withheld).
- Provide any additional supporting evidence if required (such as overseas study or other academic study).
- Submit your application.
