To help you keep full control of your Google services, Google accounts cannot be created using a University of Otago staff or student email address.
If you try to sign up with your University email address, the notification sign-up email will not arrive.
This approach is designed to protect your access. If you leave the University, your @otago mailbox will be closed, which means you would no longer be able to easily reset a password linked to that email address. Using a personal email address ensures you can retain access to manage your account securely.
If you already have a Google account linked to a University of Otago email address, you will receive a notification to rename your account the next time you sign in.
Google will prompt you to update the associated email address to a personal, ongoing account – such as Gmail or Hotmail – so you can continue to access and manage your Google services.
