The University of Otago conducts teaching and research that involves the use of human and animal participants. In both cases, it is essential that this research is conducted ethically, and the research must receive ethics approval before it can go ahead.

  • Animal research ethics approval is granted from the Animal Ethics Committee. The use of animals in research is only allowed when the potential benefits outweigh the expected harm and when no alternative method is available
  • Human research ethics approval is granted from the relevant Human Ethics Committee
