Graduation is the final step in a student’s journey through the University of Otago. The University currently holds graduation ceremonies in Dunedin in May, August, and December each year. Eligible students may choose when to graduate; this must be at the ceremony allocated to their particular qualification and normally within twelve months of completion.
Eligible students are invited to apply for graduation at the allocated ceremony for their qualification shortly before applications open
- Academic dress (regalia) must be worn by graduands and is available to hire. Details of the correct items and colours for each qualification are included in the application information.
- A degree or diploma certificate is awarded upon graduation and can be accessed digitally via My eQuals.
- The graduation ceremony is normally held in the Dunedin Town Hall and includes a formal procession, the conferring of degrees, and the graduation address.
- Graduation deferral can be applied for in limited circumstances, enabling a student to attend a ceremony later than the one allocated.
- Graduation in absentia means that a student does not attend the graduation ceremony, and the degree or diploma certificate is sent to them after the ceremony.
- Graduation in person means participating in the relevant graduation ceremony in Dunedin.
- Two guest tickets for the graduation ceremony are allocated to each graduand; extra tickets can be requested.
