If you are on an overseas exchange in Year 13, you can apply for Discretionary Entrance using your NCEA Level 2 (or equivalent) results, together with evidence confirming completion of your exchange programme.

Who can apply

You may be considered for Discretionary Entrance if you:

  • Are under 20 years of age on the first day of the semester you plan to start, and
  • Are not otherwise qualified for admission, and
  • Are a New Zealand citizen or hold a New Zealand residence class visa, or are an Australian citizen or permanent resident (with your most recent year of schooling completed in New Zealand)

Applicants are assessed on their readiness for university study.

Academic requirements

Applications are normally assessed using:

  • A minimum of 80 NCEA credits at Level 2 (or higher), including:
    • At least 16 credits in each of your top four subjects, and
    • Some Merit and/or Excellence credits, and
    • Three subjects from the approved list
  • Achievement of NCEA literacy and numeracy requirements

Equivalent overseas results may be considered. Academic readiness may also be demonstrated through successful full-time study at NZQF Level 4.

Evidence required

You will need to provide:

  • A personal letter of application
  • If applying directly from school, a supporting letter confirming your Year 13 enrolment status before 1 June in the year prior to admission
  • Confirmation of your overseas exchange, such as:
    • A completion certificate from an approved exchange programme, or
    • A letter from your overseas secondary school

NCEA results are accessed through NZQA. Ensure your results are available to tertiary institutions.

Study timing and options

  • Applicants who have used NCEA Level 3 results for admission are normally considered for semester 2 study options
  • Students currently undertaking Year 13 may be considered for Summer School or concurrent study
  • If University Entrance is gained after Summer School, you may continue your studies. Otherwise, you may apply again for a later semester
