Several graduation-related activities are held on the day of each graduation ceremony. All graduands and their whānau are invited to attend these optional events.
Graduation morning tea
The morning tea takes place before the graduation parade. It is a wonderful opportunity for you to celebrate your success with the University of Otago community. The morning tea is hosted by the Development and Alumni Relations Office and is open to all graduands and their families. It is held from 9:30am to 11:00am.
As the venue may vary, details of where the morning tea will be held will be confirmed approximately six weeks prior to your graduation ceremony.
Departments attending the graduation morning teas often display subject banners. These banners act as meeting points so graduands and their whānau can easily find and connect with staff. Information about registering subject banners is emailed out to all staff a few weeks prior to the graduation events.
Thanksgiving service
The University Chaplaincy team holds a short informal service of thanksgiving before the graduation parade, on each graduation ceremony date. All graduands and their families are welcome to attend. Further details will be provided approximately six weeks prior to your graduation ceremony.
Graduation parade
OUSA organises an informal procession along George Street before the graduation ceremony. The parade is a great opportunity for you to walk along the middle of the main street of Dunedin, towards the Town Hall and have your achievement acknowledged.
Participation in the procession is voluntary. Graduands should assemble outside the Faculty of Dentistry on Great King Street at least 15 minutes before departure, dressed in academic regalia.
The procession departs promptly at 11:30am, accompanied by bagpipers and drummers. On days where two ceremonies are held, there is only one procession. The route runs from the Faculty of Dentistry along Frederick Street, through George Street, then along Moray Place to Harrop Street.
If it is raining on the day of graduation, information about the parade will be sent via text before 10:00am. This will either confirm that the parade is going ahead or advise that it has been cancelled due to weather conditions.
