Your tuition fee account updates when you change your course. Adding, deleting, or withdrawing from papers can result in either a refund or additional fees. The outcome depends on the type of change and when it occurs.

If your tuition fees are paid by government student loan, any credit balance is applied back to your student loan. If additional tuition fees are required, the University will request payment of these fees directly from your student loan.

How fee adjustments are processed

If you have already paid your tuition fees (not by government student loan)

  • Any credit balance is refunded by the University of Otago
    • If your tuition fees are not paid by government student loan, a verified bank account is required before a refund can be processed
  • Any additional tuition fees are invoiced

If your tuition fees are paid by government student loan

  • Any credit balance is returned to your student loan
  • Any additional tuition fees are requested directly from StudyLink
  • You are responsible for notifying StudyLink of any course changes

Changing your course

After completing your course approval declaration, you can request changes to your course (such as adding, deleting or changing papers) via a Change of Course request in eVision.

Course change deadlines vary by teaching period and by the type of change. These deadlines are strictly adhered to.

How changes affect your fees

Adding papers

Pay any additional tuition fees within 20 days of registering the change.

Deleting papers

  • Deleting a paper by the applicable deadline entitles you to a refund of the tuition fees for that paper
  • Deleting all papers incurs a NZ$100 tuition refund fee

Withdrawing from papers

  • Withdrawing after the deletion deadline does not include a tuition fee refund
  • You remain responsible for any unpaid fees

Non-standard date papers

  • Deletion and withdrawal deadlines are calculated at one-third and two-thirds respectively of the paper duration, based on the paper start and end dates
  • Refer to the paper database for deadlines for non-standard date papers

Exceptional circumstances

Deletions or withdrawals after published deadlines are permitted only when exceptional circumstances beyond your control prevent course completion. Refer to the related article Withdrawal under exceptional circumstances
