Final Examination Only (FEO) is an opportunity for students who have failed a final examination to sit the examination only the next time the paper is offered, without repeating the full course.

This option can be granted once per paper, and only in the next teaching period in which the paper is offered.

FEO is designed to support students who were close to passing and want another chance to succeed. In some papers, FEO is not available; your department will let you know if this applies to your paper.

The current fee for FEO is NZ$93.00 per paper. Once approved, this fee is invoiced to your tuition fees account. The government Student Loan funding does not cover FEO fees, and FEO enrolments are not counted towards full-time or part-time study status.

If you are approved for FEO enrolment, you will focus solely on preparing for the examination and are not able to:

  • Attend lectures, laboratories, or tutorials
  • Receive academic staff assistance
  • Access electronic course materials
  • Receive printed course materials

Your original internal assessment marks are carried over, and your final result is based on those marks together with your new examination result.

Application due dates

  • Summer School papers: 10 January
  • Semester 1 and full-year papers: 1 March
  • Semester 2 papers: 31 July

Once you have submitted an application and it has been assessed, you will be notified of the outcome by email to your student email address. In some cases, you may not receive confirmation until final results for your current papers have been assessed.

If your application is approved, you will enrol in the paper through your eVision portal when it is next offered. Once course approval is completed, the enrolment will be updated to FEO.

If you choose to sit the FEO outside of Dunedin, you may be responsible for any additional costs associated with this arrangement.

Academic record and GPA

Both the original failed result and the final FEO result are recorded on your official academic transcript. Both results are included in the calculation of your GPA.

Cancelling an FEO

If your circumstances change and you no longer wish to proceed with FEO, you can cancel by emailing student-records@otago.ac.nz by the relevant deadline:

  • Summer School papers: 1 February
  • Semester 1 papers: 10 May
  • Semester 2 and full-year papers: 10 September

Cancel by the deadline to avoid a fail grade being recorded for the paper.
