Visa requirements while studying

International students studying at the University of Otago need to hold a valid visa that allows study in New Zealand. Keeping your visa and passport details current helps ensure continued access to University resources and services throughout your studies. The University's Student Visa Services team is also available to provide guidance and support with visa-related queries.

Keeping your details up to date

Any changes to your visa or immigration status (such as receiving a new visa, passport, permanent residency, or citizenship) should be shared with Student Visa Services, so University records can be updated.

Applying for or renewing a student visa

Student visa applications vary, depending on whether you are a new or returning student and where you are applying from. Applications generally require confirmation of enrolment or an Offer of Place, fee payment or approval, and supporting documentation. Applications are submitted online through Immigration New Zealand.

Students applying from within New Zealand may be issued an interim visa if their current visa expires while an application is being processed. Sharing the interim visa confirmation with Student Visa Services helps avoid disruption to University access.

Visa conditions

Student visas include conditions set by Immigration New Zealand, typically relating to attendance, academic progress, enrolment in the approved programme, compliance with New Zealand law, and holding appropriate medical and travel insurance. Changes to a programme of study may require a Variation of Conditions and can affect post-study work visa eligibility.

Working while studying and bringing family

Some student visas allow limited work rights and support applications for family members. Eligibility and conditions vary and should be checked with Immigration New Zealand.
