Referencing is a requirement in any assessment you submit that includes:

  • Another's ideas that you have borrowed
  • Direct quotations
  • Facts that are not common knowledge
  • Your own words to paraphrase or summarise another's work

Referencing (sometimes called citing or citation) means including the source of information or ideas you have used in your thinking and writing. There are many different referencing styles which vary depending on discipline.

Check with your lecturer or course co-ordinator to find out which style is required for your assignments.
