Blackboard is a web-based learning management system used at the University of Otago. Blackboard is mainly used to provide course material, to support interactions between students and lecturers, distribute and receive assignments, and undertake online tests. Not all papers at the University are taught via Blackboard.

To check for any current problems with Blackboard, refer to:

ITS Service Notices

There are three types of Blackboard papers:

  • Official papers: these are single papers listed in the University Calendar and Guide to Enrolment documents
  • Combination papers: these are combinations of two or more official papers, for example the same paper being taught at different campuses (such as Dunedin and Invercargill), or at different levels (such as 200- and 300-level) but sharing the same Blackboard information
  • Synthetic papers: these are non-official papers used for special purposes, e.g. research or for communication with specific groups. When requesting the setup of a synthetic paper you need to provide a list of the names of staff and students who form the group

Your Blackboard paper code (e.g. UNIO101) cannot be changed once the paper is set. The name of the Blackboard paper (e.g. "Getting started at Otago") can only be changed for synthetic and combination papers.
