The Provost of the University of Otago is an academic staff member who can impose penalties (greater than those of the Proctor) for students found in breach of the Code of Student Conduct, which applies to all students, both on and off campus. They operate independently to the Proctor’s Office and do not deal with academic misconduct.

Serious misconduct matters are investigated by the Proctor's Office and referred to the Provost for an outcome. Under the Student Conduct Statute 2021, the University may impose penalties including fines, community service, suspension, or exclusion for serious misconduct. This may be done at the Provost level or escalated by the Provost to the Vice-Chancellor.

The Provost also hears appeals against penalties imposed by the Proctor's Office.

Where appropriate, matters referred to the Provost may be addressed through a tikanga-led process. In such cases, the Provost (or their nominee) may participate in the process following referral by the Proctor, with the process guided by Kaitohutohu Māori.
