All new incoming international students to the Dunedin campus need to register for an international student enrolment and orientation seminar before arrival.

PhD and master's by thesis students may arrive all through the year and do not attend semester 1 or 2 orientation seminars. Students in these circumstances need to meet with an International Student Adviser by visiting AskOtago at the central library, on arrival.

Newly arriving semester 1 and 2 students must sign up for a mandatory orientation seminar, which takes place during orientation week.

At the seminar, students are given information about:

  • Completing enrolment at the University of Otago
  • Comprehensive information about all student services at the University
  • General information about Dunedin, Otago, and New Zealand
  • Receiving the student ID card (or instructions on how and when to do this)
  • Starting studies and selecting papers
  • Visa requirements
  • Insurance
  • Health system and ACC

Seminar registration will be available from November for those starting in semester 1 and April for those starting in semester 2. Students need to bring their original passport, and have their electronic visa available.
