The OUSA-managed Queer Space is a place on the Dunedin campus for University of Otago queer/LGBTQ+ and questioning students to hang out in a safe, supportive environment. The room has restricted access.

Access to the space requires your student ID card to be enabled/approved first, as the room is swipe card-only. The space is not restricted to any particular identity, but any safety concerns about who can and cannot use the room should be directed to either OUSA welfare or to Campus Watch.

The Queer Space has kitchen facilities including a fridge, microwave, hot water, and a sink. Students may also choose to study in the space as well. The Queer Support library is located in the Queer Space and students can borrow any book(s) from this library. Students are expected to keep the room reasonably tidy, and to alert the relevant staff member(s) if any of the facilities are malfunctioning.

The Queer Space is located on the first floor of the University Union building and is open at these times:

  • During semester time: 7:30am to 10:00pm weekdays and 10:00am to 10:00pm on weekends
  • Outside of semester time: 7:30am to 7:00pm weekdays and closed on weekends

If the room is locked during the standard opening hours above and no events are taking place, contact Campus Watch to arrange access:
