Computer labs on the University of Otago's campuses are equipped with computers to provide student and staff access to software and files. These rooms may be known as Computer Assisted Learning laboratories (CAL labs), or Computer Resource Rooms (CRR).
Many commonly used software applications are already installed on the computers, but additional software can be installed upon request by contacting AskOtago. Allow at least 10 working days for any request to be actioned. Alternatively, software with specialty requirements can be run on the lab computers from the Apps at Otago service.
Staff can log in to the computer labs, but will need to log in with their staff username in the format <username>@registry.otago.ac.nz
. Staff and students will have access to the same programs that are available on the computer.
As this is a new service in 2025, check first to make sure your software is available and working as expected before going to any labs.
File storage
Files need to be stored on OneDrive. If files are saved elsewhere, including on the H: Drive, they may be lost.
Course-specific software
If courses require specific software it is recommended that course specific software be installed directly on the lab computers wherever possible, especially with large applications or class sizes. Installation can be requested by contacting AskOtago – allow 10 working days for software to be evaluated and installed.
Alternatively software can be run from the Apps at Otago service.
Restricted software
Some software applications are not released for general use because they are licensed for teaching specific courses or only available to a subset of users. Restricted software will need to be run from Apps at Otago
Access to restricted software requires proof of licence before it is allocated to students, staff, or course groups. A course co-ordinator will need to request these licences from ITS Software Procurement and request the software be made available to the computer labs/Apps at Otago by contacting AskOtago. Access and licences are removed annually, so will need to be requested each year.
