The role of the Communications Office is to convey information about the University of Otago to key audiences, raising awareness of the University as a premier research and teaching institution.

There is a range of resources available for staff involved in communications:
- Communications advice can assist staff with communications queries/advice at a divisional level.
- Communications self-service resources include images, the expertise database, writing style guides, and policies.
- Māori translation services are provided by an external translator, and translations can be made for divisions, departments, buildings, programmes, roles, and services.
- Media advice is available for all staff responding to media enquiries.
- Media monitoring is undertaken by the Communications Office, and customised reports are available.
- Media training is provided by the Communications Office, including one-to-one training and group workshops.
- Staff communications are sent out regularly by the Communications Office; staff can request to add items to these emails.
- Student communications are managed by the Communications Office.
