The University of Otago offers research masters' scholarships to support students during the thesis component of a research master's degree.

These scholarships are designed for students enrolled in a master's programme that includes a thesis. Funding normally covers up to one year of full-time thesis enrolment and supports you while you focus on your research.

If you are studying for a coursework master's without a thesis component, you may potentially be nominated by your department to apply for a Coursework Master's Scholarship

Domestic applicants

The main scholarship for domestic students is the University of Otago Master's Research Scholarship. There are also a number of subject-specific and equity scholarships you may be eligible for.

Many domestic research masters' scholarships provide:

  • A stipend of NZ$18,204
  • A tuition fee waiver for the thesis year

Exact values and conditions vary by award.

International applicants

A small number of international research master's scholarships are offered each year – one per teaching division. Because these scholarships are highly competitive, they are generally recommended for students with strong grades (A or A+ level in the later years of study).

These scholarships

  • Support the thesis component only, for up to one year of full-time enrolment
  • Provide a tuition fee waiver of up to NZ$35,000
  • Require you to pay any tuition fees above that amount

Availability can vary between divisions and from year to year, so it is a good idea to check regularly for updates.
