The New Zealand Government Student Loan and Student Allowance schemes are administered by StudyLink. Eligibility criteria are set by StudyLink and may change.
Who is this available to
You can apply if you are one of the following:
- A New Zealand citizen, or
- Ordinarily resident and have lived in New Zealand for at least three years, and one of the following applies:
- You have held a residence class visa for three years, or
- You are a refugee or protected person, or
- You were sponsored into New Zealand by a family member who was a refugee or protected person at the time of sponsorship

How do I apply for a student loan and/or student allowance
StudyLink administers the Student Loan Scheme and Student Allowance on behalf of the Ministry of Social Development.
To apply:
- Visit the StudyLink website.
- Follow the instructions to apply for a student loan, a student allowance, or both.
